Role of Cranial Base Morphology in Determining Skeletal Anteroposterior Relationship of the Jaws

چکیده
Objective: To investigate the cranial base morphology in skeletal Class I, II, III patients and to find any correlation. Materials and methods: Pretreatment lateral cephalograms of 75 patients were taken, 25 patients each belonged to Class I, II and III skeletal malocclusion respectively, between age group of 14 and 25 years. Results: The significantly more acute angle N-S-Ar reflected increased cranial base flexure. Resulting anterior condylar displacement was shown by significant reduction of Se-S-Cd and Ar-Ca. Relative mandibular length was significantly increased. Conclusion: Decreased basicranial angulation associated with increase in mandibular length was clearly confirmed for skeletal Class III patients. The correlation between cranial base morphology and Class II skeletal base remains unclear.

The study was carried out to investigate the etiological skeletal factors differentiating class 2 malocclusions from class one malocclusion patients at Jinnah Medical & Dental College, Orthodontics department. A total of 34 (M:F ratio 13: 2 1) skeletal class 1 malocclusion patients (group A) and 39 (M:F ratio 23:16) severe class 2 division one malocclusion (group B) patients were selected at th...
متن کاملChanges in Cranial Base Morphology in Class I and Class II Division 1 Malocclusions.
INTRODUCTION The cranial base plays a key role in craniofacial growth; it helps to integrate spatially and functionally different patterns of growth in various adjoining regions of the skull such as components of the brain, the nasal and oral cavity and the pharynx. The aim of this study was to evaluate the difference in cranial base flexure between skeletal and dental Class I and Class II divi...
متن کاملCervical vertebral column morphology related to craniofacial morphology and head posture in preorthodontic children with Class II malocclusion and horizontal maxillary overjet.
INTRODUCTION In preorthodontic children with Class II malocclusion and horizontal maxillary overjet, cervical column morphology was examined and related to craniofacial morphology and head posture for the first time. METHODS Two hundred thirteen children (aged 7-15 years) with a horizontal maxillary overjet of more than 6 mm were divided into 2 groups of skeletal and dentoalveolar overjets. T...
متن کاملThe relationship between the cranial base and jaw base in a Chinese population
INTRODUCTION The cranial base plays an important role in determining how the mandible and maxilla relate to each other. This study assessed the relationship between the cranial base and jaw base in a Chinese population. METHODS This study involved 83 subjects (male: 27; female: 56; age: 18.4±4.2 SD years) from Hong Kong, who were classified into 3 sagittal discrepancy groups on the basis of t...
متن کامل[Radiographic cephalometry assessment of the linear and angular parameters on cranial base in children with skeletal class III].
BACKGROUND/AIM In malocclusion of skeletal class III, mandible is located in front of maxilla in sagital plain, which is manifested by a lower value of the sagital inter-jaw angle than in skeletal class I, where the jaw sagital relation is normal. Apart from the deformities on mandible and/or maxilla, in skeletal class III deformities are also frequent on the cranial base. The aim of this resea...
